INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE - STEVE JOBS

Hello Friends, it gives me great pleasure a new section to my blog - INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE. This part will contain articles about interesting people from all walks of life who have made our lives better with their contribution to mankind.

STEVE JOBS
Inventor (1955–2011)
Steven Paul "Steve" Jobs was an American entrepreneur, marketer, and inventor, who was the co-founder, chairman, and CEO of Apple Inc.

SYNOPSIS
Steve Jobs was born in San Francisco, California, on February 24, 1955, to two University of Wisconsin graduate students who gave him up for adoption. Smart but directionless, Jobs experimented with different pursuits before starting Apple Computers with Steve Wozniak in 1976. Apple's revolutionary products, which include the iPod, iPhone and iPad, are now seen as dictating the evolution of modern technology. He died in 2011, following a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
EARLY LIFE
Steven Paul Jobs was born on February 24, 1955 in San Francisco, California. His unwed biological parents, Joanne Schieble and Abdulfattah Jandali, put him up for adoption. Steve was adopted by Paul and Clara Jobs, a lower-middle-class couple, who moved to the suburban city of Mountain View a couple of years later.
The Santa Clara county, south of the Bay Area, became known as Silicon Valley in the early 1950s after the sprouting of a myriad of semi-conductor companies. As a result, young Steve Jobs grew up in a neighborhood of engineers working on electronics and other gizmos in their garages on weekends. This shaped his interest in the field as he grew up. At age 13, he met one the most important persons in his life: 18-year-old Stephen Wozniak, an electronics wiz kid, and, like Steve, an incorrigible prankster.
Five years later, when Steve Jobs reached college age, he told his parents he wanted to enroll in Reed College — an expensive liberal arts college up in Oregon. Even though the tuition fees were astronomical for the poor couple, they had promised their son's biological parents he would get a college education, so they relented. Steve spent only one semester at Reed, then dropped out, as he was more interested in eastern philosophy, fruitarian diets, and LSD than in the classes he took. He moved to a hippie commune in Oregon where his main activity was cultivating apples.
A few months later, Steve returned to California to look for a job. He was hired at the young video game maker Atari, and used his wages to make a trip to India with one of his college friends, in order to 'seek enlightenment'. He came back a little disillusioned and started to take interest in his friend Woz's new activities.
APPLE COMPUTERS
After high school, Jobs enrolled at Reed College in Portland, Oregon. Lacking direction, he dropped out of college after six months and spent the next 18 months dropping in on creative classes at the school. Jobs later recounted how one course in calligraphy developed his love of typography.
In 1974, Jobs took a position as a video game designer with Atari. Several months later he left Atari to find spiritual enlightenment in India, traveling the continent and experimenting with psychedelic drugs. In 1976, when Jobs was just 21, he and Wozniak started Apple Computer. The duo started in the Jobs family garage, and funded their entrepreneurial venture by Jobs selling his Volkswagen bus and Wozniak selling his beloved scientific calculator.
Jobs and Wozniak are credited with revolutionizing the computer industry by democratizing the technology and making the machines smaller, cheaper, intuitive and accessible to everyday consumers. Wozniak conceived a series of user-friendly personal computers, and—with Jobs in charge of marketing—Apple initially marketed the computers for $666.66 each. The Apple I earned the corporation around $774,000. Three years after the release of Apple's second model, the Apple II, the company's sales increased by 700 percent, to $139 million. In 1980, Apple Computer became a publicly traded company, with a market value of $1.2 billion by the end of its very first day of trading. Jobs looked to marketing expert John Sculley of Pepsi-Cola to help fill the role of Apple's president.
DEPARTURE FROM APPLE
However, the next several products from Apple suffered significant design flaws, resulting in recalls and consumer disappointment. IBM suddenly surpassed Apple in sales, and Apple had to compete with an IBM/PC-dominated business world. In 1984, Apple released the Macintosh, marketing the computer as a piece of a counterculture lifestyle: romantic, youthful, creative. But despite positive sales and performance superior to IBM's PCs, the Macintosh was still not IBM-compatible. Sculley believed Jobs was hurting Apple, and the company's executives began to phase him out.
Not actually having had an official position with the company he co-founded, Jobs left Apple in 1985 to begin a new hardware and software enterprise called NeXT, Inc. The following year Jobs purchased an animation company from George Lucas, which later became Pixar Animation Studios. Believing in Pixar's potential, Jobs initially invested $50 million of his own money in the company. Pixar Studios went on to produce wildly popular animation films such as Toy StoryFinding Nemo and The Incredibles. Pixar's films have netted $4 billion. The studio merged with Walt Disney in 2006, making Steve Jobs Disney's largest shareholder.
REINVENTING APPLE
Despite Pixar's success, NeXT, Inc. floundered in its attempts to sell its specialized operating system to mainstream America. Apple eventually bought the company in 1996 for $429 million. The following year, Jobs returned to his post as Apple's CEO.
Just as Steve Jobs instigated Apple's success in the 1970s, he is credited with revitalizing the company in the 1990s. With a new management team, altered stock options and a self-imposed annual salary of $1 a year, Jobs put Apple back on track. His ingenious products such as the iMac, effective branding campaigns and stylish designs caught the attention of consumers once again. In 2003, Jobs discovered that he had a neuroendocrine tumor, a rare but operable form of pancreatic cancer. In 2004, he had a successful surgery to remove the pancreatic tumor. True to form, in subsequent years Jobs disclosed little about his health.
MORE INNOVATIONS
Apple introduced such revolutionary products as the Macbook Air, iPod and iPhone, all of which have dictated the evolution of modern technology. Almost immediately after Apple releases a new product, competitors scramble to produce comparable technologies. Apple's quarterly reports improved significantly in 2007: Stocks were worth $199.99 a share—a record-breaking number at that time—and the company boasted a staggering $1.58 billion profit, an $18 billion surplus in the bank and zero debt.
In 2008, iTunes became the second-biggest music retailer in America—second only to Wal-Mart. Half of Apple's current revenue comes from iTunes and iPod sales, with 200 million iPods sold and 6 billion songs downloaded. For these reasons, Apple has been ranked No. 1 on Fortune magazine's list of "America's Most Admired Companies," as well as No. 1 among Fortune 500 companies for returns to shareholders.
PERSONAL LIFE
Early in 2009, reports circulated about Jobs' weight loss, some predicting his health issues had returned, which included a liver transplant. Jobs had responded to these concerns by stating he was dealing with a hormone imbalance. After nearly a year out of the spotlight, Steve Jobs delivered a keynote address at an invite-only Apple event September 9, 2009.
In respect to his personal life, Steve Jobs remained a private man who rarely discloses information about his family. What is known is Jobs fathered a daughter with girlfriend Chrisann Brennan when he was 23. Jobs denied paternity of his daughter Lisa in court documents, claiming he was sterile. Jobs did not initiate a relationship with his daughter until she was 7, but when she was a teenager she came to live with her father.
In the early 1990s, Jobs met Laurene Powell at Stanford business school, where Powell was an MBA student. They married on March 18, 1991, and lived together in Palo Alto, California, with their three children.
FINAL YEARS
On October 5, 2011, Apple Inc. announced that its co-founder had passed away. After battling pancreatic cancer for nearly a decade, Steve Jobs died in Palo Alto. He was 56 years old.
His whole life has been an inspiration for many young people all over the world and will be remembered forever y the name of innovative technology.

PREVENT DENGUE

Recently, Dengue has become an epidemic in the city of Mumbai. In the past few months, many people have been diagnosed with this disease and its spreading rapidly. I have tried to collect some useful information regarding Dengue. Kindly spread aware awareness regarding this issue by sharing it. Let’s try to keep our city clean.
Dengue is a painful, debilitating mosquito-borne disease caused by any one of four closely related dengue viruses. These viruses are related to the viruses that cause West Nile infection and yellow fever.
Each year, an estimated 100 million cases of dengue fever occur worldwide
DENGUE MOSQUITO - AEDES AEGYPTI

The mosquito Aedes aegypti is responsible for transmitting dengue viruses between people. In some localities other mosquitoes can also contribute to transmission but their contribution is very minor.

Aedes aegypti originates from Africa, but is now distributed globally in tropical and subtropical regions. Global redistribution was assisted by mass human migrations, first to the New World associated with the slave trade between the 15th to 19th centuries and secondly to Asia as a result of trade during the 18th to 19th centuries. Worldwide redistribution occurred after World War II following troop movement.

Added to this global distribution of the mosquitoes, rapid human population growth and increased urbanization has led to substandard housing, inadequate water supply and waste management systems and consequently an abundance of mosquito breeding sites. Storage of drinking water and other urban water, containers including plant-pot bases, guttering, tarpaulins and tyres and discarded containers can all collect rainwater and provide habitat for Aedes aegypti larvae.

Importantly, mosquitoes do not naturally carry the dengue virus but must acquire it from a dengue-infected person before they can transmit it to another person. Only female mosquitoes bite, requiring the blood for egg production, and therefore only female mosquitoes transmit the dengue virus.
SYMPTOMS OF DENGUE FEVER

Symptoms, which usually begin four to six days after infection and last for up to 10 days, may include
·         **Sudden, high fever
·         **Severe headaches
·        **   Pain behind the eyes
·        ** Severe joint and muscle pain
·        **  Nausea
·        **   Vomiting
·         **Skin rash, which appears three to four days after the onset of fever
·        ** Mild bleeding (such a nose bleed, bleeding gums, or easy bruising)
Sometimes symptoms are mild and can be mistaken for those of the fluor another viral infection. Younger children and people who have never had the infection before tend to have milder cases than older children and adults. However, serious problems can develop. These include dengue hemorrhagic fever, a rare complication characterized by high fever, damage to lymph and blood vessels, bleeding from the nose and gums, enlargement of the liver, and failure of the circulatory system. The symptoms may progress to massive bleeding, shock, and death. This is called dengue shock syndrome (DSS).
People with weakened immune systems as well as those with a second or subsequent dengue infection are believed to be at greater risk for developing dengue hemorrhagic fever.
TREATMENT
There is no known vaccine to treat dengue; prevention is the only way to keep away from the virus. Hospitals offer only supportive care in order to maintain the body fluid levels and platelet transfusion in case it drops to extremely low. (A normal platelet count in a healthy individual is between 150,000 and 450,000 per microlitre of blood).
PREVENTION AND CONTROL
Prevention is the only way to combat the mosquito-borne disease. Prevent measures include:
i) These mosquitoes breed in accumulated water and unhygienic conditions. The best way is to eliminate all the possible breeding grounds for the mosquitoes
ii) Regular cleaning, emptying and covering of water storage containers
iii) Using mosquito repellents, nets
iv) Wear long-sleeved clothes
WHAT TO DO INCASE DIGANOSED WITH DENGUE
Hospitalization is not required until one is suffering from severe dengue or has preexisting health conditions. It can be well managed at home as hospitals provide only supportive care.
1. Take all preventive measure as being infected with another stereotype of dengue when already diagnosed with one can be fatal
2. Try to maintain body fluid level, with ample intake of water and oral rehydration solution in short intervals.
3. Though there is no specific diet for dengue patients it is important to avoid spicy and oily food. Eat food that can be easily digested like boiled vegetables, rice gruel, porridge, soup, toast, apples, and bananas. Crushed juice of two fresh papaya leaves is a good home remedy for dengue fever. Chymopapin and papin - enzymes in the papaya leaf - help revive platelet count.
4. Paracetamol is used to bring down fever, however, painkiller like ibuprofen and aspirin should be avoided as they reduce platelet count and increase risk of bleeding.
5. Go for blood test, monitor BP regularly and follow up the condition with the doctor.

So friends be safe, be clean and prevent a mosquito bite

CHINESE INVASION IN SMART PHONES

CHINESE SMARTPHONES ARE A TREND TODAY
It was great to get good cheers and suggestions regarding my last article- The OS shootout. Taking a step future from it, let’s discus something regarding manufacture of smartphones. Even since the invention of mobile, there has been a drastically huge development in the technology in manufacture of phones .Everyday, there are some new things to talk about and use. China has developed a lot. Every part and component in smartphones is manufactured in China. Major companies like Samsung, Apples, Motorola, and LG import their components (especially processors screens, etc.) from the mainland. However, from the past 5-6 years, many Chinese companies like Gionee, Oppo, Coolpad, OneTouch, and Xiaomi have begun to ply their trade.

During their first two years, these smartphones sold their hot pancakes in China. Later, companies like Gionee, Oppo, Xiaomi breached into Indian Territory. They offered cool smartphones with all features and software in a single piece. The screen resolutions are worth looking at. Brilliant design and ergonomics makes them a dependable choice. The distinguishing point remain that their price is very low 1\4th of that offered by Samsung , Apple and LG. so , it was not surprising that within about 8-10 months , they were killing the sale of other renowned flagship smartphones.
Reports suggest that in the sales of Samsung and Sony have lowered by 40% in the past financial year .These Chinese smartphones have had a big influence in this .Their marketing strategies have been planned by experts. Although, only online sale of the product is something that many of us hate.
OPPO N1

Gone are the days when our elders used to say, “Don’t thrust on China phones. They will stop working after 2 months “. Now that belief has changed dramatically due to affordable pricing and unique designs Gionee S5.5 (worlds slimmest smartphones), Oppo N7 (phone with a rotating camera) , Xiaomi Redmi 1S that shook Flipkart with its record breaking sales are just a few to speak about .
On the whole, just try some of these phones and expect a lot coming.

STARTUP OF THE YEAR - ZOMATO

The  Economic Times Startup of The Year 2014 is Zomato. Zomato is an online restaurant discovery guide providing information on home delivery, dining-out, cafés and nightlife in cities of India, Brazil, Turkey, Indonesia, New Zealand, the Philippines, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Qatar, Chile, Portugal, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, Canada, and most recently, Lebanon. Zomato recently acquired the online restaurant search services in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland. The site has an Alexa rank of 1,067 in the world and 92 in India as of July 2014.
When Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal heard the news that his firm was ET Startup of The Year 2014, the 31-year-old left his meal unfinished to call his colleagues and share the news with them. It is this kind of camaraderie that has made the company, which was set up in 2008 by Goyal and Pankaj Chaddah, 29, grow from an office cubicle to having a presence in 16 countries globally.
"We are elated with this news. Since the time I entered IIT Delhi, I always wanted to start something of my own," said Goyal. Zomato employs about 800 people now, of which almost half are based India. "Our goal now is to build a billion dollar company out of India which can rival large players such as Yelp by entering the US, the largest dining market in the world," he added. The startup is aiming to earn revenue of about Rs 100 crore this year and has turned profitable in India. As colleagues at Gurgaon-based Bain Consulting, Goyal and Chaddah used to collect food menus of restaurants nearby that they would pin to their soft boards. When they saw how often their colleagues used to leaf through the bundle, the two had their big idea.

For about 18 months, the two worked on weekends on their website that soon listed 1,200 restaurants in New Delhi. Enthused by the results, they hired Gunjan Patidar, their junior from IIT Delhi, to run the show till they quit Bain Consulting to join fulltime in 2009. Goyal did not disclose that he had set up Zomato to his academician parents till six months after quitting his job for fear of a rebuke. However, the secret was unearthed when they visited Delhi from their hometown in Punjab. There was no looking back however for the duo, despite parental advice to go back to doing a 'real' job. "They feel very proud now," said Goyal.Delhi-based Info Edge invested $1 million in the venture, which was rebranded from Foodiebay to Zomato to focus on other segments besides food. With the seed money, Zomato expanded to Bangalore, Pune, Kolkata and Mumbai.
Zomato also set up an events listing and ticketing portal that was shut in 2012. "The learning from the failure was that it is extremely important to stay focused on the core product and not spread ourselves thin," said Goyal. The company's headquarters is based in a plush Gurgaon building completely renovated by employees themselves. The Zomato building has eating nooks and a mini kitchen for cooking eggs, noodles and toast on each of its floors. The turning point for Zomato came in 2012 when it ventured outside India. "While we were slightly nervous, our success in the UAE set the tone for our global expansion," Goyal said. Zomato now also operates in the UK, the UAE, South Africa, New Zealand, the Philippines, Brazil, Turkey, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Qatar. The company has 240,000 restaurant listings ranging from street food outlets and small cafes to plush restaurants at five-star hotels. Revenue till now originated mostly from paid listings and banner ads.

However, the company is revamping its model from this year to start monetising table bookings. It is also looking at getting into cash-less payment at restaurants. "We are moving to the uber kind of one-touch payment model where money will be automatically deducted from your credit card after you leave the restaurant," said Goyal. For table bookings, the company has already tied up with two of the largest companies in London — TopTable and LiveBookings. Zomato passes on reservation leads to them and earns a commission in return.

THE OS SHOOT-OUT

THE OS SHOOT-OUT

Today's article will be related very closely to all my dear friends. Smart phone has become an integral part of our daily lives.  We use smartphone everywhere from home to office schools and colleges. Due to extensive use it is necessary that we know about the operating system of our smartphones. Gone are the days when we used feature phones with limited os and few personalized options.  The mobile operating systems today have a variety of features. Below I have tried to list out 3 popular operating systems - android,  ios and windows.  It is difficult to take out the best however I have tried to collect information on the basis of user reviews. There is a remarkable shootout going on in the digital world.

ANDROID

Android is a mobile operating system (OS) based on the Linux kernel and currently developed by Google. Android is designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers. Android is the most widely used mobile OS in the world and, as of October 2014, the highest selling OS overall. Android devices sell more than Windows, iOS, and Mac OS X devices combined. Applications ("apps"), that extend the functionality of devices, are developed primarily in the Java programming language using the Android software development kit (SDK). A huge number of apps developed by 3rd party developers have facilitated its use. Google Play Store is the primary application store installed on Android devices that comply with Google's compatibility requirements and license the Google Mobile Services software. The play store has proved to be a boon for gamers and entry level users. The themes can be customized in every possible way and give the phone a unique look. Any person who uses Android becomes addicted to it. Android uses Multitasking quite efficiently. Most Smartphone manufacturers are releasing their flagships based on Android. This OS gets the most number of updates in a calendar year. The latest version LOLLIPOP 5.0 has caught many eyebrows. Android has constantly evolved to the most favourite OS among consumers and keeps on spreading its wings.

Overview of Home Screens

WINDOWS PHONE

Microsoft's Windows Phone was met with rave reviews from day one of its launch back in late 2010, but despite its beautiful and smooth UI it hasn't caught up with users. One way or another, part of the blame for this was some immaturity of the platform - multitasking arrived later and it was very limited, the apps weren't there, customization was somewhat limited, and the list just went on and on. Windows has been the most popular desktop OS over the years.Start Screen which can be customized according to taste. Although Windows Phone does not support the name wallpaper, but the Start Screen filled with Live Tiles enough to spoil the users who use it.  Application updates a little bit longer than the other OS. Because users of Windows Phone fairly far less than Android and iOS, the developers usually will put in a second application update OS from Google and Apple, then update to Windows Phone 8 will be issued. It is the most colourful OS among all and just starting to attract audiences Although Microsoft  has a lot of work to do.

iOS

iOS is the foundation of iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. It comes with a collection of apps that let you do the everyday things, and the not-so-everyday things, in ways that are intuitive, simple and fun. iOS 8 comes with big updates to apps you use every day, like Messages and Photos. A whole new way to share content with your family and exciting new connections between apps and between devices, all that and more make iOS 8 the biggest iOS release ever. iCloud is built into iOS. It makes sure your devices always have the latest versions of your documents, apps, contacts and more. It even helps you track lost devices. On the whole ,this Apple product is awesome just like the others. Everyone gets eager to get hands on it as soon as a new version is launched. However its affordability among middle-class users is an issue.

So….what are you waiting for select your favourite smartphone OS and use it to the full extent.
Select what you want
